Hermano L - Shantytown, Vallecas
Vallecas, one of Madrid's working-class neighbourhoods on the south east outskirts of the city, is a special place. Self-declared as an independent republic, it has its own identity and atmosphere, holds many secrets and you never quite know what's around the corner. While local boys Rayo Vallecano were due to take on Madrid giants Real Madrid across town, a stone's throw from the Rayo stadium a giant of the Spanish hip-hop and reggae scene, Hermano L (aka Herman Ele) was warming up the crowd in the gem of a bar that is Shantytown.
A pioneer of the toasting scene in Spain, Hermano L is known to many for his role in hip-hop group, La Puta Opépé. His versatility and positive vibe was on show throughout the early evening set. Warmed up by the sweet tones of Double Barrel Sound, the scene was set for collective ‘Fucking DJs Sound’ to take over with DJota Pe on decks and Hermano L at the helm. Shades on, black adidas zip top and a Public Enemy t-shirt had us sure we’d be in good hands. Hermano L kept it cool and breezy throughout. He switched effortlessly from old school to new, dancehall to ska, reggae and hip-hop flavours. The crowd turned out to see him and he didn't disappoint. A relaxed, positive and cool show from an artist who's been at it for years.
I only popped in for a drink. I left after a few, grinning from ear to ear and lost my voice and mind somewhere along the way. A great, unexpected set at the local market. Not bad for a Sunday evening and a great warm up to new reggae outfit Awake's gig in Moby Dick.
